24.05.2010  Over 150 thousand users of “Pay with your mobile” service in mPay

The mobile payment system managed by mPay surpassed 150 thousand registered users and is the longest in service and most popular commercial mobile payment system on the Polish market.

The solution offered by mPay S.A. — an ATM subsidiary — gains more and more popularity, and the number of its users surpassed 150 thousand. mPay S.A. has been present on the Polish market for nearly 3 years and since its establishment has been participating in all major initiatives related to development and raising popularity of mobile payments. Among others, for past 1.5 years the company has been involved in commercial implementation of a mobile system under the “Pay with your mobile” brand for the largest mobile phone networks. It's worth noting that this initiative was driven by Polkomtel S.A., a company that has supported development of the mobile payments market in Poland since its beginning.

”Pay with your mobile” is a widely available system managed by mPay platform, enabling payments by mobile phone for pre-paid card top-ups, parking charges in 8 Polish cities and public transport tickets in Warsaw and Lublin. It also allows paying in online stores and completing person-to-person money transfers.

“Unlike other systems currently developed, being in test stage or working with limited functionality, the mPay solution has been commercially available in Poland for almost 3 years, supporting tens of thousands transactions every month.” — said Konrad Łuczak, President of the Management Board, mPay S.A.

Solutions offered by mPay S.A. are currently available in four main mobile phone networks in voice recognition mode (IVR), as well as in text mode (USSD) in Polkomtel and Play networks. The mPay system has been compatible with Near Field Communication (NFC) technology since its very beginning. It means that it transfers data between phones and other devices through special radio links. The only obstacle to widespread NFC technology use is the lack of phones and devices equipped with NFC interface on the market. It's worth noting, though, that the NFC technology was successfully deployed commercially by mPay over 1.5 years ago and it is used e.g. in paid parking zones. The municipal police officers responsible for controlling the payments have been equipped with mobile phones with embedded NFC system that allows for a nearly automatic verification of payments by putting the phone close to a sticker on the windshield of a car. NFC-type communication is in this case one of the components of the mobile payments system offered by mPay S.A. in Polish cities. The works on implementing this technology for checking public transport tickets bought using the “Pay with your mobile” service are currently nearing the end.
